Shipping containers pose many complications and opportunities when repurposed as a construction material. All inherent difficulties must be accounted for, from structural issues to dimensional considerations, to create a successful design meant for modern-day living.
We developed a prototypical, semi-modular lake cabin plan with an out-of-state client that utilizes three containers surrounding glass-enclosed living space. Inspired by So-Cal Mid-Century design, a uniform roof increases the ceiling height. Additionally, many built-in features help solve the dimensional challenges.
Lastly, the whole cabin is elevated above the final grade to create a floating effect, keeping eyes above the native tall grasses on the site.
