+lake quivira redux

Location: Lake Quivira, Kansas
Client: Withheld
Cost: Withheld

Lake Quivira is a highly sought after area of Johnson County, Kansas; a private, gated, lake community rich with history, amenities, landscape, and architecturally diverse homes. The clients had the opportunity to purchase a recently renovated home at the furthest south end of the lake. The catch? The only renovated part was the interior. The exterior still showed its original 1950's skin that had been completely hidden by a myriad of builder-grade wood decks over the years. The new owners wanted a house that was distinctly modern that would fit their tastes and lifestyle along with providing increased physical and visual connection to the lake from the main interior living space of the house.

A bold plan that stripped the exterior siding and previous decks from the house proved to be the answer. A new lowered deck with cable railings provided the clear visual connection to the lake while stained wood siding gave the warmth and a contemporary look the clients were after. To help blend the new exterior with the interior, the roof overhang was pulled back over the upper floor dining room and the respective room saw its ceiling vaulted to create drama and promote better light in the house.

Lastly, the length of the residence was more carefully modulated by adding accent siding at the elevated bedroom and creating a stained wood 'anchor' at the central kitchen.

This work was completed while at NSPJ Architects.
